This is a super short list of books written for Artists/Creatives/Designers (whatever label you want to use) that have really helped me throughout the year. I hope that they will inspire and guide you too, whether you are a professional artist, an amateur creative, or someone looking to learn a new skill.
Visible Mending by Arouna Khounnouraj was given to me for Christmas last year and it’s pages are well thumbed now. From learning about how to darn socks, to discovering methods of Sashiko stitchwork, this has been my go to book for textile mending. It is very easy to follow, has helped me to reduce textile waste in my studio and home this year, and has contributed greatly towards my sanity.

Linocut by Sam Marshall is the BEST book I have found about relief printing methods. Yes, I do have a degree in textile design, but I specialized in silkscreen and heat transfer methods at college. This book helps me to fill in all the gaps in my knowledge surrounding lino printing and I am enjoying every minute of learning from it. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning to block print regardless of prior experience – it leaves you feeling inspired.

Speaking of inspiring, Creative Block by Danielle Krysa has gotten me through some really rough patches. 2023 has been a difficult year for me professionally, with a lot of interruptions to my work life and a lack of flow in my studio time. There have been moments when I have seriously thought about throwing the towel in. This book has helped me get unstuck in those moments. It is full of tasks set by artists that can help to get your creative juices flowing again after a block. This is a good book for solo workers who need a little nudge every now and then.

Happy Holidays to you all and keep learning new things every day! I love a fresh start, and am already thinking about how to use the new knowledge and skills I am learning from these books next year. Look forward to new and exciting projects in 2024.
